This seminar will cover selected topics relating to the legal regulation of the visual arts and cultural heritage. Topics may include, among other things, legal definitions of ?art? and ?artist;? copyright, moral rights, and resale royalty rights, as these relate to the visual arts; disputes involving the restitution of stolen artworks; art and armed conflict; antiquities and the trade in cultural property, including issues surrounding the repatriation of cultural artifacts and human remains; and free speech issues relating to the visual arts, including censorship, obscenity, and government funding for the arts. The emphasis, however, will be somewhat less on learning the minutiae of black-letter law and more on discussing the bigger picture and the policy issues pertaining to the above topics.
